What Is An Email List And Why You Need One To Start Your Business

When I first started my business I knew nothing (just like Jon Snow) about email marketing.

All I ever did was to create as much noise as I could on the social media “party platforms” like Instagram, and to get disappointed and discouraged as a result, when no one was paying attention to what I had to say.

And then I discovered email marketing or newsletters as they used to be called (the word got out of fashion for some reason).

For an introvert like me, this was pure bliss. It still is.

Sending emails and starting meaningful conversations with good people feels so much natural to me than shouting aimlessly in a crowded room such as Facebook.

So, I joined an email marketing service and started sending emails, making mistakes and learning from them.

And now, I’m doing an article series on email marketing because I’d like to help you start building your list, getting to know your ideal customers and telling them about your business and its mission.

What is an email list?

As the name suggests, this is a list of emails of your potential customers, usually gathered through email marketing services such as MailChimp, ConvertKit or MailerLite.

It’s used to communicate with your audience, deliver special content that you don’t offer anywhere else and to promote your products and services.

Why do you need an email list?

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear - if you want to run a successful online business (and you want that, why else would you be reading this?), you need an email list. Here’s why:

According to research email marketing is more effective than social media when it comes to promoting your business and keeping in touch with your ideal customers.

And when you’re just starting your business you need to focus on connecting to people (read more about the 3Cs in the free Brand Basics guide) and you need to make the most of every second and every dollar you’ve dedicated to building and growing your tiny operation.

If that’s not convincing enough for you, here are seven reasons why you need to start your email list right now:

1. You’ll reach the right people

In order for you to successfully promote and market your products, you need to talk to people who are already interested in you and your business, and not to just random people on the internet. And the best way to do this is to attract people who love what you have to say on your website.

2. Everyone has an email

You don’t have to cover three or more different social media channels to reach your people, you can be in their inbox.

3. It’s personal

It’s much more personal to write an email than to use the common playground of the social media platforms. As an introvert, I value a one-on-one conversation much more than the noisy place Facebook and Instagram are. Email is still the best way to communicate with people if you want a deep and meaningful conversation.

4. It’s perfect for introverts

You don’t have to shout loud in the crowd, you can talk quietly directly to your people and give them more value.

5. the list is yours

It’s your email list. You control how you reach your people, not some obscure algorithm created to make money for a corporation, not to help you build trust with your audience.

6. It’s simple

You don’t need graphics for it. Sure, you can go into full design mode too, but you don’t have to. You can start with an email looking like a simple letter to a good friend.

7. You can save precious time

You can automate your whole communication and save tons of time you can then spend with your kids, growing your business and enjoying life.
